Volume 3 of the Apothecary Green trilogy set in eighteenth-century Lichfield, England.

Providential chance brings Apothecary Richard Greene to the aid of a terribly injured man – the victim of a mantrap on a nearby estate. An encounter that will ultimately reveal the survival of an astonishing Roman artefact, the Ashmole Box, and bring about not only the deaths of all who seek to gain from its discovery but also force Greene into questioning the passions and principles that have been the touchstones of his life. 

With every passing day the years that separate the long-dead Ashmole and the hapless inheritors of his legacy seem to dissolve and intertwine, as first one and then another of the cryptic pointers yield their secrets and point the way to a discovery beyond the Apothecary’s wildest imagining.
